Self Care Rituals To Celebrate The Autumn Equinox

Updated: Sep 12

The Autumn Equinox marks the moment when day and night are almost equal in length. It is a beautiful time of balance, transition, reflection, and to practice giving thanks for all that we have.
This year, in the Northern Hemisphere, the Autumn Equinox falls on September 22nd.
As Summer gently gives way to Autumn, Nature begins to slow down. The days become shorter, the evenings cooler, and the leaves begin to change into beautiful shades of gold, amber, orange, and red. The trees release what they no longer need, reminding us that there is beauty in letting go.
The Autumn Equinox invites us to pause, turn inward, and reconnect with ourselves. It is a wonderful opportunity to release what no longer serves us, appreciate everything that has blossomed in our lives, and prepare for the new season ahead.
Here are a few self care rituals to celebrate the Equinox:
Create a cozy Autumn sanctuary.
As the weather begins to cool, creating a cozy sanctuary in your home can help you feel more rooted, balanced and calm.
Bring out soft blankets, plush cushions, warm textures, and beautiful Autumn inspired accents. You can add candles in soothing scents like vanilla, sandalwood, cinnamon, amber, or cedarwood.
Create a little corner where you can retreat to the end of the day. Perhaps it becomes the place where you enjoy a cup of tea, read a book, meditate, journal, or simply sit quietly with a candle burning nearby.
Allow yourself to savour these slower moments. Autumn reminds us that rest is necessary and healing. There is beauty in slowing down, getting cozy, and creating space to simply be.

Support your body with warm, nourishing foods.
Autumn is harvest season and it brings an abundance of nourishing foods that are perfect for creating warm, comforting meals.
Visit your local Farmer's Market and look for seasonal ingredients like pumpkins, squash, apples, pears, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, mushrooms, and leafy greens.
Take the time to cook up warming soups, roasted vegetables, nourishing stews, baked apples, oatmeal, and comforting meals made with fragrant herbs and spices.
You may like to create a special Autumn Equinox meal using as many seasonal ingredients as possible. Set your table beautifully, light a few candles, and take the time to appreciate the food you prepare for yourself and your loved ones.
A hot cup of tea can also become a lovely Autumn ritual. Try herbal teas like chamomile, ginger, cinnamon, peppermint, or rooibos. Add a little honey or a slice of lemon, and enjoy it slowly.
Let your meals become an opportunity to nourish your body with warmth, presence, pleasure, and thankfulness.
Take a mindful walk in Nature.
Autumn is a wonderful season to reconnect with Nature. Take a slow walk in the park, forest, garden, or anywhere you can enjoy the changing landscape.
Notice the colours of the leaves, the crispness of the air, the sound of branches moving in the breeze, and the feeling of the Earth beneath your feet.
As you walk, notice what Nature teaches you about change. The trees don't resist the changing season. They simply release what they no longer need and prepare for a period of rest.
It's a lovely reminder that we too, can let go of what no longer serves us as we prepare for what lies ahead.

Reflect on what you are ready to release.
The Equinox is a beautiful time to reflect on what you would like to let go of. Find a quiet and comfortable place where you can sit with your journal. Light a candle, make yourself a cup of tea, and take a few slow, deep breaths.
Allow yourself to reflect on the past few months and everything you have experienced, learned, created, and grown through.
And ask yourself these questions:
What am I most thankful for from this past season?
What has brought me the most joy?
What have I learned about myself?
What am I ready to release?
What would I like to make more space for?
How can I bring more balance, peace, and ease into my life?
What would I like to create now?
Allow your thoughts to flow naturally. This is a wonderful way to get clarity on your next steps and find more alignment with your own intentions.
Do a clearing for your home.
As the seasons change, Autumn is a lovely opportunity to clear your home and create space for the energy you would like to welcome into your life.
You can begin by opening your windows and allowing fresh air to move through your home. Let the crisp Autumn air refresh each room and imagine any stagnant energy gently leaving with it.
You may like to smudge your space with sage, palo santo, or sweetgrass. You can also light some of your favourite incense and carry it through each room in your home, with the intention that positive energy is now flowing into your space.
If your home could use a deeper energetic reset, a fire clearing is a beautiful way to release stagnant energy and invite positive energy into your home (you can learn more about my fire clearings here).
Create an Autumn altar.
An Autumn altar can be a sacred space to honour the themes of balance, thankfulness, grounding, transformation, and release.
Choose a special place in your home and decorate it with colours inspired by the season. You can use a cream, terracotta, golden yellow, deep green, or burgundy cloth on your altar.
Add seasonal treasures like dried flowers, leaves, acorns, pinecones, small pumpkins, branches, feathers, candles, or meaningful objects collected during your Autumn walks.
You can also include crystals that support the grounding and reflective energy of the season:
Smoky Quartz helps encourage grounding, stability, letting go of what is no longer needed, and finding the positive in all parts of life.
Citrine is associated with warmth, optimism, abundance, and appreciation.
Carnelian supports courage, creativity, vitality, and inspired action as you move through times of change.
Black Tourmaline is a grounding stone, helping you feel centred and supported.
Amethyst encourages peace, spiritual connection, intuition, and healing.
Clear Quartz amplifies your intentions for the season ahead, and invites healing energy into your space.
Give yourself some quiet time at your altar each day. Light a candle, meditate, journal, or simply sit in silence and appreciate the beautiful space you have created.

Create a harvest appreciation bowl.
This is a fun ritual that can help you honour the blessings in your life throughout the Autumn season.
Choose a special bowl or jar that you love. You can surround it with crystals, Autumn inspired items, or decorate it if you choose. Place it somewhere you will see it often, like on your bedside table, kitchen counter, or Autumn altar.
Throughout the season, write down little moments that you are thankful for and place them inside your bowl. They don't need to be very significant or extraordinary (of course they can be when those moments unfold). Some of life's greatest pleasures are found in the simplest moments.
Here are some ideas for your bowl:
A beautiful conversation.
The smell of rain.
A delicious meal.
A kind message from a friend.
A peaceful morning.
A cozy evening at home.
A beautiful sunset.
A walk through colourful Autumn leaves.
A moment of deep, belly laughter.
A feeling of being loved.
A gift that came to you out of the blue.
Something wonderful that manifested for you.
Whenever something brings you joy, take a moment to pause and write it down. You can add the date if you like, so the memory comes back when you read through it later on. Think of each little note as a blessing you are gathering throughout the season.
At the end of Autumn, light a candle, make yourself a warm drink, and take some time to read through each note slowly. Let yourself relive the beautiful moments you may otherwise have forgotten. And notice how much goodness has been present in your life.
You don't need to wait until the season ends before going through your bowl. Anytime you need a little emotional boost, sit with your bowl and read through your blessings.
Remember that abundance is about recognizing and appreciating the blessings that are already here. You'll notice that the more you count your blessings, the more will flow to you. And you may need to get a larger bowl, or a taller jar to place all your lovely little notes.
These self care practices are a beautiful way to welcome the Autumn season with intention. This is a time to let go of anything that is no longer a match to who you are becoming. And it's also a time to appreciate all that has been created, cultivated, and nurtured within your life.
That will set you up for everything that is coming next.
May this season bring you peace, balance, abundance, and many blessings!
